Depression – Symptoms To Watch For
Unless someone is familiar with the symptoms of depression, it’s hard to diagnose. Over 15 million Americans will suffer some type of depression this year and many will not even know that they have it. 2/3 of those never seek help.
Why is depression hard to spot? The answer is easy. Occasional issues like sadness are common and have nothing to do with depression. Therefore, it is not always easy to distinguish between what is perfectly normal and what it a sign of danger.
It’s not unusual to feel some negative feelings on occasion. For instance many people feel a bit unhappy when they turn 40. There are many who see this as some milestone of reflection that causes us to ponder and evaluate our lives.
For many it may be depressing to some extent. That’s not depression. Short term feelings and normal moods are not depression. Depression sticks with people, and just gets more severe when not addressed. It may require years to get a handle on this illness.
Typical symptoms of depression can be irregular sleeping or eating habits. Short term bouts of these things are not symptoms, but if extended for a long time they are.
People suffering from depression become loners. Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness aren’t unusual. People feel isolated and then become anxious about those feelings. They may want to reach out for help but cannot bring themselves to do so.
It becomes difficult to deal with other people. They may have been the person on the desk wearing a lamp shade, now nobody knows they’re in the room. These are symptoms in the early stages.
When depression has progressed into later stages it begins to become apparent in their ability to be compatible with others around them. They find themselves silent when it’s time to speak up at work or in social situations. They find it harder to face others as well as themselves.
They see no hope or purpose for living and begin to consider ending it all. To escape this conclusion requires early detection. Help is out there for people who suffer with depression.
The proper care and treatment can return the victims from suffering to normalcy. If you or someone you love are experiencing lingering symptoms of depression please consult a medical professional for a diagnosis. Only you can save a life.
